Reminders:

  • Tomorrow is the Christmas Concert. Please send your child in their pajamas and send a pair of slippers so we are ready to perform at the afternoon concert (1 pm). The evening show is at 7 pm, but students are expected to be in the classroom at 6:30 to prepare. 
  • Wednesday is Pajama day and students may also bring a stuffie. We are watching a movie with the other Grade One and K class and will have free popcorn!
  • Friday is an early dismissal day. Please pick up your child at noon.
  •  We do have spelling this week, but I have not sent home little readers.

Reminders:


  • We have an assembly this week! You are welcome to come and watch it on Wednesday at 1:30 in the gym. Please make sure your child is practicing their part at home.
  • Just a reminder that our costume for the Christmas Concert is pajamas and slippers. It's an easy one this year. Next week on Monday (15), Tuesday (16) and Wednesday (17) we will wear pajamas to school. Monday for dress rehearsal, Tuesday for the afternoon concert (1pm), the evening performance at 7pm and then on Wednesday for pajama day. It will be one comfy week! 
  • On Wednesday there is a hot chocolate sale. You may send 50 cents if you would like your child to purchase a cup. 
  • We are collecting items for a hamper in our class. If are able to donate food, gift cards, or cash that would be greatly appreciated!  
  • Also just a reminder that next Friday (19) is a noon dismissal.

Weekly Work: 

  • Spelling is focused on the sounds of ack, sl, pl and fl. 
  • In phonics we are working on the short sound of e. Any unfinished work will be sent home on Thursday
  • We are working on addition in the classroom, and we are learning about touchpoints to help us. I will send some information home about this method.

  • Little Books were sent home today. Please continue reading and practicing sight words. 
  • On Wednesday there is a candy cane sale for $1 each as well as Hot Lunch.
  • Our Grade One class is in charge of doing an Advent assembly on Wednesday, December  10th.  It will be at 1:30 and all parents are welcome to attend. Tomorrow, I will be sending out parts to practice at home.

Reminders:

  • Spelling tests were sent home today. Please sign and return. If your child has brought home a piece of paper, please look around for their spelling book please. Thank you!
  • Spelling test this week on Thursday. 
  • Your child brought home two books to practice reading for the week. There is a note inside the bag that explains the details. Please have your child bring the books back on Friday. 
  • The Parish Bazaar is coming up and if you would like to purchase your child's craft, please send in the money as soon as possible. The order form is on a notice you received last week. 
  • We have been given our Christmas Concert (Dec. 16) costumes from Mrs. Mar and it's a great one! Grade 1K and 1P will be wearing pajamas and fluffy slippers. If they don't have fluffy slippers any slippers will do. 
  • Wednesday is a non-uniform day (Philippine flag colours) to raise money for an orphanage in the Philippines that our Christian Servers are supporting. Please send in a donation for this non-uniform day, usually a $1.  There will also be a popcorn sale for 50 cents a bag. 
  • Keep sending in Report Card Covers. Thank you!
  • Thursday night and Friday morning are 3 way conferences. See you then!

The Kindergartens and Grades Ones will be dressing up for "Fifties day" It can just be as simple as a white t-shirt and jeans for the boys and a white blouse and jeans for the girls.

Reminders: 


  • We are having the Living Rosary Assembly and Walk-a-thon prize give away on Wednesday (rescheduled due to the power outage).
  • Friday is our Saint Dress up day! Students may come in a saint costume or in their uniform. 
  • We are also having a Saint party on Friday afternoon, with the rest of the primary classes. If you would like to make a class set of cupcakes for service hours, please let me know. Thank you!
  • Hot lunch on Wednesday

Weekly Work:
  • We have started our spelling program! We had a pre-test today and we will have a test on Friday. It will be sent home to be signed and then returned on the Monday for the next pre-test. The words are on the blog for the children to study. 
  • We are finishing up short vowel a in phonics and any unfinished work will be sent home on Thursday to be completed by the next day. Hopefully everyone will finish it in class! If it is sent home, they will write what pages they need to do in their planner.
  • Please continue reading at home (Raz-kids or books at home) and practicing sight words when you are able to do so.

Reminders:

  • No school on Friday. It's a PRO-D Day.
  • Thursday is photo retake day. If you would like your child to have a retake, please send me a note in the planner or an email. Thank you!
  • Please return any interim reports .
  • Friday, October 31st is All Saints Dress up day. Students are allowed to dress up as their favorite saint. Do not feel any pressure to buy a costume, there are lots of easy ideas on the internet that use towels or sheets. If you have any questions about this, I would be happy to help.
  • For our All Saints dress up day, we need a class set of cupcakes. If you would be willing to make some for service hours please let me know. Thank you!
Weekly Work:
  • We are working on short vowel a this week. We have also started working on word families and are doing 'at' and 'an' words this week. 
  • Everyone should now have sight words to work on at home. When you think your child has mastered the list, please just let me know and I will send home a new list. 
  • We will be starting to work on addition this week!
  • During Religion, we are still learning about the Rosary and will begin talking about the Luminous Mysteries.

  • A Scholastic order was sent home today. If you would like to order, please send it in by Friday. It is helpful if they come in on the due date, so that I only need to order once. Thank you! 
Weekly Work
  • I will be sending home the first set of sight words later on this week. Please practice with your child so that they are confident with these words. 
  • This week in phonics we will be working on the sound of y, z and medial sounds. We will be starting our work on vowels very shortly.
  • We have started Guided Reading! 
  • In Religion we are learning about the Joyful Mysteries
  • We are continuing our work with base ten blocks this week during math

  • In our phonics we will be working on consonant sounds of c, r and p and if time perhaps qu.
  • We are almost ready to start guided reading. We are now practicing having students complete different tasks at the same time. Some are doing word work, others reading to themselves, while another group is doing read to someone. They are doing great!
  •  In Math, we are working with making groups of tens and we will be using ten and one blocks to show numbers 10-20

Reminders

  • Our Walk-a-thon is approaching very quickly. We are already having a "Pledge Tally Day" on Wednesday. On this day we will ask the students how much they have raised so far. The class with the most so far will get extra recess! Thank you so much for all your support!
  • Hot Lunch is on Wednesday. If you have ordered through the paper form or online, your child will be receiving it this Wednesday. 
  • Friday is a Food Bank Mass. Students are asked to bring in one food item to donate! Thank you!
  • Also thank you for all the coins on Terry Fox day! We raised so much money!
Weekly Work
  • Please continue working with the letters sent home. 
  • You should have received a RAZ-kids information sheet last week. If you haven't please let me know and I can send you a new one.
  • In  our phonics and alphabet book we will be working on the sounds of  j, f,g, l and d. These would be great letters to practice and make words with at home this week.
  • In Math, we are working on the strategy of counting on and using the math language "more than". We will also be looking at number charts and thinking about which number comes next.
  • In Science, we are continuing with day and night and demonstrating how the tilt of the earth creates the seasons.

Reminders

  • On Wednesday we are having our Terry Fox Walk. We will have an assembly and then walk around the school grounds. We have been asked to bring in coins to support this cause and the class with the most money will win free popcorn! 
  • On Friday we have an assembly for our Fitness-a-thon (revamped version of the walk-a-thon). 
  • Tomorrow students will be receiving their login information for Raz-Kids. Look for it in their new yellow home folders!
Weekly Work
  • We have been learning about the colours of the Liturgical year. Specifically focusing on four colours; purple (before the feast), white (during the feast), green (after the feast) and red (Feast of the Holy Spirit). We will be going into the church to see where we can find these liturgical colours. 
  • In our phonics we are working on the sounds of h, m and k.We will be looking at both initial and final sounds of these letters
  • We are still building our reading stamina and are now reading for ten minutes! Students have also been introduced to some of our word work tasks for literacy centers. 
  • In Math, we will be counting using a chart, reviewing the concept of less and more, and counting the extras to find out how many more. 
  •  Science is beginning this week. We will start with weather words and observe the weather we see outside. Also, we will talk about the sun and how we have day and night.

  • Picture day is on Friday! We will be wearing our uniform on this day, so please make sure your child has their sweater. 
  • Thank you for selling so many Entertainment Books! There are check in days on Tuesday and Thursday. If you are unable to sell the books, you may send them back.

Weekly Work 

  • We have been learning about our prayer table, spending time in prayer, and learning our basic prayers. During quiet time (while students are finishing lunches), some students have been having a "Bible School" where they read the Bible together and then pray together at the end. Very inspirational! 
  • Our phonics book was started today. This week we will do Partner letters, and sounds of s,t,b, h, m and k. We will also write down words for these letters in our alphabet books.
  • We have been building our reading stamina and can read up to six minutes with everyone entirely focused on a book!
  • We are still reviewing math concepts and are matching numbers to objects, identifying groups of five and putting numbers in order.

Welcome Back

Welcome to Grade one! I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are eager to be back in school mode. I am excited to get to know all of you and your wonderful children!

Here are just a few reminders about tomorrow

  • At the beginning of school, students will line up at the primary doors to be brought in. If it is raining they may come inside the classroom to stay dry.
  • We have early dismissal on Wednesdays. Students should be picked up at 2:00 pm.
  • We are starting gym classes this week, so please send gym shoes as soon as possible. 
  • Please look for a letter and a form to fill out in your child's backpack tomorrow night.
